What is a Med Spa?

The term Medical Spa, or med spa, distinguishes a spa that performs aesthetic treatments under the supervision of a medical director who is a doctor or nurse practitioner (depending on which state you are in.) Even though Idaho allows a nurse practitioner to oversee laser and injection services, we have chosen to have Dr. Higginbotham oversee treatments and address any issues that may arise.

The services performed and the state in which those services are being performed are what designate whether a medical director is necessary. Treatments such massage, facials, spas, lashes, ect. can all be performed in a day spa, and are not required to work under the supervision of a medical director.

Medical grade lasers and injectables are powerful tools to perform a wide variety of aesthetic treatments with. However, with that power also comes the risk of reactions, side effect, or laser burns. No matter where you are having treatments performed, we always recommend you ask what the spa’s plan is in the case of any adverse reactions to treatment. The medical director is in place to be able to quickly respond if necessary and be knowledgeable of the types of treatments being performed and who is performing them.

Also, always answer pre-treatment questions truthfully, they are there to protect you, even if that means you must re-schedule a treatment for another day.
